MUMBAI:
Legislative council deputy chairperson Neelam Gorhe embraced Shiv Sena in the presence of CM Eknath Shinde and deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis, declaring she was making the switch to be with the real Shiv Sena, which she said was made clear after the recent Supreme Court decision.
A four-term member of the legislative council, Gorhe enjoyed the patronage of Thackeray throughout her time in the undivided Shiv Sena and later the Shiv Sena (UBT), superseding many others to key posts. She was till recently a spokesperson of the Shiv Sena (UBT) and a vocal critic of Shinde. “I have joined the official Shiv Sena as it is heading in the right direction under the able leadership of Eknath Shinde,” Gorhe said at her induction.
She said she was switching loyalties to Shiv Sena to work for social justice, women’s empowerment, Marathi, Hindutva and the overall development of the state and country.
Gorhe lauded the initiatives of the NDA government at the Centre on issues like Ram Mandir, justice for talaq-affected women, uniform civil code and the hoisting of the Tricolour in Kashmir. She referred to the Shah Bano case of 1985 and said there was a need for equal justice for women.
Gorhe is the third MLC to enter Shiv Sena after the recent induction of MLCs Manisha Kayande and Viplove Bajoria in the Shinde-led party. Gorhe said there was a need to work on agricultural policy, women and child welfare, issues of tribals and deprived classes, and the unorganised sector. “I am joining the Sena for it. I am entering into this party by respecting the legislative framework around my deputy chairperson’s post,” she said.
Gorhe did not criticise Thackeray, but there were many in Shiv Sena (UBT) who attacked her on her exit. “The party has given her a lot. But even then she has left the party for personal gains,” a Shiv Sena (UBT) politician said.
Speaking on Gorhe’s entry, Eknath Shinde said it was a historic moment.
