NEW DELHI: India is planning to buy 26 Rafale fighter aircraft and three Scorpene class conventional submarines from France.
The proposals have been placed before the defence ministry by the defence forces and are likely to be announced during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to France this week.
The three Scorpene class submarines will be acquired under the repeat clause by the Navy as part of Project 75 where they will be built in the Mazagon Dockyards Limited in Mumbai.

All about the Scorpene submarines:
- The Scorpène-class submarines are a class of diesel-electric attack submarines jointly developed by the French Naval Group and the Spanish company Navantia.
- It features diesel propulsion and an additional air-independent propulsion.
- The Scorpène class of submarines has four subtypes: the CM-2000 conventional diesel-electric version, the AM-2000 AIP derivative, the downsized CA-2000 coastal submarine, and the enlarged S-BR for the Brazilian Navy, without AIP.
- The 1,565-tonne submarine is named after a species of tiger shark, a deep sea predator in the Indian Ocean.
- The submarines boast of superior stealth features such as advanced acoustic silencing techniques, low radiated noise levels, hydro-dynamically optimised shape and the ability to launch a crippling attack on the enemy using precision-guided weapons.
- The submarine is equipped with sea-skimming SM-39 Exocet missiles and heavy-weight wire-guided surface and underwater target torpedoes.
