In a significant development in the Jharkhand election results, chief minister Hemant Soren‘s wife Kalpana is locked in a close fight in the Gandey constituency even as her party seems to be hurtling towards its best performance ever with Election Commission data showing the JMM leading in around 33 of the 81 assembly seats.
As per the latest EC data, Kalpana is leading by just 300 votes against BJP’s Muniya Devi.

Her husband Hemant Soren is leading by over 21,000 votes from the Barhait assembly constituency against the BJP candidate.
The JMM-led alliance has comfortably crossed the halfway mark of 41 in the assembly with at least 49 seats in the bag as per leads, indicating strong support despite Kalpana’s individual struggle in her constituency.
Voting in Jharkhand occurred in two phases on November 13 and November 20. The overall turnout was approximately 67.74%, with slightly higher participation in the second phase at 68.95%.

Rising star in JMM

Kalpana Soren has an educational background in engineering and business administration. She entered politics relatively recently but quickly gained prominence within the JMM.
Kalpana formally entered politics on March 4, 2024, coinciding with the foundation day of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM). This was shortly after her husband was arrested on charges related to money laundering, which thrust her into the political spotlight as she took on campaigning responsibilities for the party during a critical election period.
She quickly became a key figure in rallying support for the party and its candidates, effectively communicating with voters and addressing their concerns.
Kalpana conducted over 400 rallies within a short span. As per poll experts, her speeches resonated well with tribal voters, particularly women, making her a significant figure in local politics.
She has been described as both a communicator and an orator, qualities that have helped her build a strong rapport with constituents.
Poll experts have said Kalpana focused on issues that matter to her constituents, including financial aid programmes like the Maiya Samman Yojna. Her commitment to these initiatives has strengthened her position within the party and among voters.
