'Tear gas, rubber bullets won't work': Congress chief Kharge attacks PM Modi over anti-farmer policies

NEW DELHI: Congress national president Mallikarjun Kharge on Friday targeted Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the ongoing farmers’ agitation and said that due to “your anti-farmer policies, stubbornness and false promises” the farmers are pleading for justice from the government.
Kharge’s remark came after the Supreme Court of India earlier today left it to the Punjab government and doctors on the hospitalisation of farmer leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal, who is on an indefinite hunger strike.
The apex court in its ruling said that the Punjab government is responsible for looking after the farmer leader, who has been holding the fast for over 24 days.
‘Tear gas, rubber bullets won’t work’, says Kharge
Taking to X, Kharge said that farmers are “self-respectful because they feed the country” and this time “lathi-baazi, tear gas, rubber bullets, abusive words like ‘agitator’ and ‘parasite’ will not work.”
He asserted that deterioration in the health of Dallewal is a matter of great concern and it is the responsibility of the government to end the fast unto death. He added that Centre should adopt the path of dialogue.

“When you were forced to withdraw the three black laws, you had announced the formation of a committee to give legal status to MSP, the whole country wants to know what happened to that promise?” Kharge questions.
He added that farmers are the backbone of the country and betraying them is betraying the country.
Apex court seeks report on Dallewal’s health condition
A bench of justices Surya Kant and Ujjal Bhuyan sought report from the Punjab chief secretary and health officials on the health conditions of Dallewal by January 2. The court further added that if a need arose then state government could approach the court.
The farmer leader has been on an indefinite fast since November 26 to press the government to accept various demands including a legal guarantee of minimum support price (MSP) for crops.
Farmers belonging to Samyukta Kisan Morcha (non-political) and Kisan Mazdoor Morcha are also camping at the Shambhu and Khanauri border since February 13 after they were stopped by the security forces to march towards Delhi.
